Artist's Statement

My goal is to engage viewers emotionally by creating representational light filled paintings with intense colors and strong value patterns. I would like the viewer to feel a part of the landscape or as if they could reach out and touch the animals I paint.

For me, plein air painting is about recording my emotional reaction to a specific time on a specific day. Each painting begins with a quick intake of breath as I spot a light filled section of the landscape that jumps out and grabs me. It can be the beautiful colors, the textures of the grasses, or the abstract patterns of the shadow and light that appeal to me and call me to paint them.

"Peaceful Valley"

This beautiful setting is found in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. The studio painting was done after one of my many painting trips to the area. I was drawn to the contrast of the warm red earth and the greens of the fields and trees, and the light on the
old white farm house.

"Standing Proud"

This plein air painting was done on a hot June day near my home in Greensboro, North Carolina. I was drawn to the colors of the roof and barn, and how stately it stands on a hill as the surrounding farmland is being taken up with encroaching
developments.
