Laurel Lake McGuire

Boise, Idaho

Artist's Statement

Laurel Lake McGuire is an artist firmly grounded in the realist tradition, with a vision of capturing moments in nature and life as they are in our mind and heart. Growing up in Gloucester, Massachusetts, with it’s strong artistic history, the artist started from a background of classical watercolor but rather quickly started to work in a layered and more solid style. Watercolor has always been her main passion and has been a good medium for her many moves across the years to places such as Hawaii,  the Mojave Desert,  New Orleans etc.

Not limited in the subjects she finds interesting, the artist has painted portraits and figures, landscapes, animals and perhaps her favorite subject, still life and florals. In her paintings, her aim is to convey that moment when your eye is arrested and your mind is illuminated with the soul of a scene.

Never one to chase after the current fashion, Laurel has chosen to work in the subjects and styles that she finds most authentic to her vision.  She thinks of her paintings as both accessible and open to deeper exploration. Art is a window that lets the viewer see through both their eyes and mine.

When we lived in Hawaii, all the schools had regular hula performances for assemblies etc. I was struck by the grace and charm of these young girls waiting their turn and intrigued by working with nighttime and artificial light in the school cafeteria.
