Betty Jean Billups

Sandpoint, Idaho

Artist's Statement

“Capturing an inner feeling, a moment so quickly passing ...that is beyond words, almost beyond thought. In art, as music, there are rhythms, movements, flow and ebb...the nuances that dance between a mountain and the sky that embraces her, creating a symphony that the eyes perceive but only the soul can remember.

This celebration of light upon the physical & the ethereal creates a love affair, not only between these, but also for the viewer. It is this special moment in time that excites her, that drives her to risk even failure, if she but has a moment to capture a fraction of what she sees, and feels, from this wonderful thing we call “Life!”

B.J.Billups, signature member of Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA), and Emeritus, Master Signature member of WAOW, created effective ad campaigns for both groups in the 80s & 90s.

Commissioned portraits and figurative work by Betty Jean Billups can be created either from life, or from photo references. She also accepts commissions for murals. In 2007, Billups was commissioned to create a mural for Mt. San Antonio College, Walnut CA.

“The power and sweep of this unique style of B.J. Billups is comparable with the leading painters of our century and before. The strength of her painting strokes combine masterfully with her extraordinary command of the artist's color palette.”
