Artist's Statement

As a landscape painter, I love the great outdoors, particularly the scenes of the southwestern deserts and coastlines. Currently, I am drawn to plein air pastels as
I enjoy being in nature, looking at a beautiful scene, and translating the emotions of what I see onto the paper.  My hope is that I am able to convey in my art, the feelings of joy and tranquility that I experience when painting.

My paintings have been exhibited in local and national juried shows throughout the United States.  I have also been honored with a number of awards and recognitions at these venues.

"For me, an even greater reward has been enjoying the camaraderie of fellow artists, studying with plein air masters, and the experience of meeting and getting to know the individuals who appreciate and collect my work."

"Dunes and Wildflowers"

Pastel on wallis sanded paper
This little Pastel was completed in “Plein Air” and painted very quickly as the sun was setting into the ocean.  It was a beautiful afternoon in late April, and I was in Pacific Grove, CA.  I walked down to the beach and this scene had to be painted.  The contrast of the dark green of the low growing pines on the beach and the wildflowers was magical.  I had to paint quickly, and I think that is why this painting came out so well.  It has won a number of awards.

" Dunes and Old Tree"

Plein Air Pastel on pastelbord

This old tree is on the grounds of Asilomar Conference center in Pacific Grove, CA.  It was a foggy morning, and the group I was painting with, decided to say on the grounds and paint rather than go out in the fog.  This old tree however seemed to shine in the morning diffused light, and the wildflowers on the dunes are one of my favorite subjects to paint.

"Eucalyptus Morning Shadows"

Plein Air Pastel on pastelbord

This old eucalyptus tree is on a divided street lined with old eucalyptus and palm trees, in the city of Riverside, CA.  This particular tree has inspired me to paint it more than once, as the pealing bark and the huge wart on the side seem to speak of a past history, unknown to us painters who come at least a few times a year to capture the glory of this and other huge trees along the roadside.   On this morning the shadows and the white bark were spectacular.

"“Peek through the trees”

Plein Air Pastel on Wallis paper.  "
Point Lobos State Park, CA, is a magical place to paint.  On this morning, I happened to be drawn to this particular clump of old Monterey cypress trees, with a glimpse of the ocean in the background.  Thus the title “Peek through the trees”.
