Sue Favinger Smith

Redmond, Oregon

Artist’s Statement

Sue Favinger Smith has been working as a professional studio artist since 2001.  She translates her ideas through the landscape in a contemporary style that reflects strong influences from the Russian Impressionists, particularly through the use of symbolism and the capacity of the natural world to represent metaphors for life.

Sue Smith's paintings have been exhibited in major national shows, including American Women Artists, American Impressionist Society, Oil Painters of America Western Regional, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, Women Artists of the West, and the National Association of Women Artists Members Exhibition.  She continues to live and paint in the High Desert of Central Oregon with her husband and two dogs.

Barn and Baler Shed

"Barn and Baler Shed"

oil

My focus is primarily on the landscape. Looking, experiencing, touching, and feeling -- these are all necessary for my work. I pick up a dry and brittle twig from the debris of a passing storm, feeling the energy in my fingers, delicate, before crumbling away - it is this energy I try to interpret with my work.

Summer Morning

"Summer Morning"

oil

There is something to be discovered in the lifeblood of nature.  By exploring landscape – the energy within and around us, the wind, sun, rain, trees and rocks and leaf-fall, all the processes of life as we experience it – through this effort we can hope to understand the whole.

Mile Post 46

“Mile Post 46”

oil

This painting is from my Mile Post Series.  These paintings explore the textures of the landscape ~ familiar as we recognize the forms and relationships, and sense the energy in the empty space. Each painting begins with a specific place - a Mile Post - representing both our movement through the physical world, as well as major markers within our own lives.
