Love of nature’s beauty, energy, and form in tandem with an intense palette are apparent in my artwork. Capturing the gesture and inner character of my subjects is my primary intent.
A strong sense of form and passion for figures and still life remain from my art origins in figurative sculpture. My early art training and career in graphic design have honed my skills to focus on the subtle, powerful, character of my subjects.
To bring a painting to life I exaggerate and simplify. Through use of heightened color I enhance my feeling of the subject’s energy and mood. I often start with random, but intuitive, application of color to set overall tone. Successive layers of watercolor follow and I react and build on that—it’s an interactive process, not a preconceived outcome. Watercolor allows me to paint quickly and with great flexibility.
As my work matures, I’m moving in closer to my subject. Paintings are more intimate, direct, graphic and powerful—evolving back to being sculptural.
