Artist's Statement |
Raised in an artist's household in Carmel Valley,
Gwen grew up with the process of making art from an early age.
Although she explores a range of subject matter, Gwen’s passion
is the landscape of the Southwest, from New Mexico to California,
from desert canyons and high mountains to the seashore. She balances
her outdoor painting time with painting in the studio adjoining
her gallery, Joyous Lake, but enjoys painting plein air best. One
of the best times to paint in the White Mountains is the fall season,
when the aspens turn the mountains a deep yellow gold. She then
hosts an annual plein air (on location) painting event called "Paint
the Aspens," to celebrate that beautiful fall color.

"Copse Near Green's Peak" |
Oil |
|
| After fleeing the high cold winds on Green's
Peak, we spotted a copse of trees at its base that looked
both interesting and protected. Nice combination of rocks
and yellow paths of aspen leaves through them. Plein Air. |

"Indian Canyon Oasis" |
Oil |
|
| Although specializing in landscapes of the
White Mountains, my history and travels take me to other
parts of the Southwest as well, this time to La Quinta for
the Desert Plein Air festival. One of the sites painted by
participating artists was the oasis at the San Andreas Overlook
up on the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation. That glowing
desert light is the real subject of this painting. |

"Bend in the River, Yosemite" |
Oil |
|
| The Merced River, as it flows through Yosemite
Valley...wonderful in early fall when the crowds aren't
quite as thick. |

"Pima Lane" |
Oil |
|
| Pinetop-Lakeside is a beautiful community, whose residents
show an an obvious attachment to the graceful trees and
woods of this area. This scene is especially intriguing
when those tall cottonwoods take on their fall color.
Made a steering wheel easel for my car so I can paint
comfortably in this increasingly cold weather, and it
really works. Plein Air. |
